Jazz is an American art form, whose roots go back to the middle of slave songs and songs of the 19th century. The 20th century saw the flowering of art as a form of instrumental music in the southern United States States, mostly along the Mississippi River and particularly New Orleans, Louisiana.

In early New instrumental jazz combos Orleans varied instrumentation. More often than not, these early jazz bands usually consisted of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, tuba and percussion. This instrumentation became what is known as Dixieland "" combo, making their way to the Mississippi River to Chicago, where music became popular by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong.

Dixieland combos can be considered as groups that "play polyphonic" improvised music. Each instrument is independent of any other instrument, with each player individually creating musical improvisations based on tunes, or "songs" Week.

Players from these early jazz combos each had a specific role within the group. The trumpeter is dependent on the state of the melody of the track, while the clarinet complex improvised lines over it. The paper was improvising trombonists or "fill" the central registry with the lines and notes that were essential to the chord changes of the song itself. The tuba (or bass), usually established root notes (and 5ths) of each chord on beats 1 and 3 of each measure. The tuba was the anchor of harmonics in a group. Finally, the role of batteries to keep everyone together, maintaining a steady beat on the whole of the song.

As jazz music evolved through the years 1940 and 1950, the instrumentation of jazz began to be more standardized. The jazz quintet, "and" sextet "became very popular during this time. The quintet formed by trumpet and high (or tenor) saxophone as the main instruments melodic, while the rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) took care of rhythm and harmony.

The sextet added a trombone to form what was essentially a line of three in front of Horn of rhythm section accompaniment. The sextet extra melodic instrument allowed the horns more harmoniously to add depth to the sound of the group. Each instrument has a role not only as a melodious voice but also as an integral component also the harmonic structure.

Modern jazz combo composed of a variety of instruments - 4, 5 horn combos are commonplace. As the group grows in size however, the name of "combo" is replaced by "band" or "little big band".

The jazz combo has provided a musical outlet creative and countless musicians over the last 100 years. The jazz combo continues to jazz musicians the opportunity to work together to make music not only as a group, but also to develop their own voices as individual jazz improvisers. Is and probably always will be the perfect vehicle for learning the art of jazz improvisation.
