Freestyle Old

Dale Begg-Smith has become the first Australian man to win a freestyle medal World Championship skiing, taking bronze in moguls at Ruka, Finland, during the night.

The result continued a record year in which the 20-year-old skier made three World Cup podiums and finished second in the final of the Cup season classification.

It is also the second ore € ™ s the world championship medal in any discipline of skiing and the first since Malcolm Milne won bronze in fall in Val Gardena in 1970.

Begg-Smith qualified in fourth place behind a trio Finn Janne Lahtela, Sami Mustonen and Mikko Ronkainen, with pre-race favorite Jeremy Bloom of the United States â € "Champion of the World Cup out of control - the end of contention after a serious error in the final jump of the course.

In the end, the Australian began with a perfect score in the high jump, scored highest shift of judges and posted the fastest time for the course.

But a bad landing on the final jump cost him valuable points, and plunged in third place behind American Nathan Roberts and Canadian Marc-Andre Moreau.

With the house of the three heroes of the city to come, no one in the 5000 strong crowd fanatical Begg-Smith gave no opportunity for a place on the podium.

But three failures, major mistakes on his way to the battery during Run 218 meters, 2002 Olympic champion Lahtela producing the best result in the session.

Begg-Smith for taking a medal at a world championship was undoubtedly more important than the success of this year's World Cup.

â € OEI world champions that are most important, â € œ he said. â € œTheyâ € ™ re once every two years, and thereâ € ™ s no doubt that everyone who comes to world championships wants to do well. €

â € œOn World Cup, someone like Janne (Lahtela) may not care much, because everything he has won so many World Cups, but no doubt everyone wants to do his best once every two years in the world championships.â €

Conservative â € OEI started this season and itâ € ™ s paid off as the season has gone. Focusing only stifle good runs allowed me to pick up speed gradually, feeling confident because I knew I had good tracks behind me.â €

â € œBefore I was trying to go fast right away, and if youâ ™ € cause you're not quite sure you can do every time.â €

Not for the first time this season, Olympic Winter Institute Head coach Steve Desovich Mughals was surprised that his star athlete had accomplished.

â € œWhen you look at where we were 12 months ago and where we are now, progress has been enormous, € â € Desovich said.â

â € œToday was a tremendous performance. Landing in the air at the bottom was all that was sub-par today, both races, and thata € ™ s what may have ultimately cost him make better.â €

â € œHe has a tendency to play very safe, so to see the speed that was in the qualifying round was not immediately known who was focused and could produce something special.ed €

â € œHis go up in the end it was a perfect score of the two judges, who have the highest score and becomes almost the highest speed â € "thata € ™ s very impressive.â €

â € œIf he had said at the beginning of the season would be top ten at the end of the year I have been very, very happy.â €

â € OESO to finish second in the World Cup and then pick up a medal at the world championships, so itâ € ™ s been an incredible year for him.â €

Of the other Australians in the field, Nick Fisher finished in 23 th place in 23.16 points, Michael Robertson in the 26th place on 22.99 points and href = "http://www.mctproject.com/"> Jason Begg-Smith in 34 at 21.53 points.

™ € In the women s event, the only competitor from Australia, Manuela Berchtold, finished in 23 th place in 18.88 points after problems landing his first jump.

United States skier Hannah Kearney was the gold medal in 26.40 points from Nikola Sudova of the Czech Republic at 26.31 stonemason and Margaret of Austria.

The double World Championships moguls event will be played Sunday
