Progressive rock appeared in the 1960s when rock artists wanted to break the barriers of radio formatted pop and rock and progress of this musical to a place where he could reach a more sophisticated sound, similar to classical music or jazz. "Jethro Tull Thick as a Brick in" or Rush "2112" are just two of the most appreciated prog rock albums released in the 70s. Furthermore, this decade brought another ten sub-genres of progressive rock to life, and many progressive rock bands emerged in this period. Like progressive rock was not complicated enough, folk art, classical, prog, prog folk, ambient, river, pomp prog, jazz fusion, electronica, krautrock Zeuhl and were classified as sub-genres of rock genres from the 60s.

In the next two decades, progressive rock did not progress as much as it had up to that moment. In the 80s, was dethroned by the punk movement and progressive rock bands chosen to give birth to another sub-genre: neo progressive. There were few progressive rock albums released in the 80s, some of the most prolific of being Rush "Moving Pictures "or warning of Fate" No Exit. "Progressive Metal Rock also appears as a sub-genre in this period. The 1990s were dominated by the development of progressive metal, Dream Theater through. This decade is characterized mainly by the revival of the progressive scene in the seventies.
