Memphis soul music is a subset of the genre of soul music. Soul music emerged in the 1950s in African American neighborhoods in Chicago, Memphis, Detroit and Philadelphia. It all started when artists like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles began to combine traditional gospel with R & B music Each of the cities that was influenced by the Soul music developed their own distinct sounds and Memphis soul music relied heavily on the Gospel of the inspiration for his style.

At this point, Memphis music was almost exclusively out and enjoy the famous Beale Street. The sound of soul music of Memphis went to a small area of residential streets just south of the city, this area was known as Soulsville, USA. This is the neighborhood that are credited for the birth of Memphis Soul music. Stax Records was the label that was in the center stage of soul music in Memphis. The label was founded in 1957 and was originally known as Satellite Records. Stax Records was co-owned by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton. The sound of Stax Records was developed by a group of musicians and writers as the home of Steve Cropper, Isaac Hayes and David Porter. This sound is most widely known by its characteristic fine, two tin horn sound.

Stax Records and Memphis soul music was always in competition with what was the release Motown Records. The great Memphis soul music has always had a much more syncopated tone giving him a funky quality polished songs from Motown simply did not have. Stax Records was responsible for the production of songs with each singer, songwriter and musician in the Memphis area, but soul music in Memphis extended beyond that. Performers such as Aretha Franklin, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Al Green also recorded songs in the studio Real near Hi Records.

The only thing that all record labels, studios and musicians had in common was WDIA. WDIA was the first radio station in America to be fully implemented by African Americans. Nat D. Williams was the disc jockey who led the local radio station. Williams was a high school teacher and nationally syndicated columnist. Williams worked with another rider named Rufus Thomas to bring the street to the station and the waves of nations. Memphis soul music has a long history in the old quarter and soul singers today cite him as an influence and something that revolutionized the way we listen to music.
