What is the sun rising in the bottom of the nail bed?
What is the purpose or function of origin of the coloration clearer in a semicircle at the bottom of the nail bed that looks like a rising sun? It is at the root of the nail? Also why the clear demarcation between the part and the darker side. I think it would be more gradual.
What you refer to is the lunula of the nail. It's part of the definition of distal edge of the nail of "free". What it means is that is the bottom of a fingernail that is really the presentation and over the skin. This is the first part to be seen by the growing nail. This is not the root of a fingernail. The root is actually under the skin. The party responsible for the nail grow is the matrix of the nail that is actually hidden under the skin and more distally in the finger. The lunula is seen as early as 14 weeks gestation (when the nails begin to appear). The nail itself is almost colorless. The reason is the nail is pink, because blood and tissue underneath. As a provider of medical services, seek changes in circulation and perfusion here. This area will be the first to turn purple / blue (cyanotic) due to a decrease in oxygen. You may also see signs of hypoxia and chronic liver disease through examination of the nail (lunula). Moreover, its color is a measure of perfusion (from blood) to the distal tip of the fingers.
